Milbury steps down as senior vice-president of Isles, will remain as adviser

Milbury, who stepped down as Islanders general manager last year, will continue to work with the team as an adviser to owner Charles Wang. "Mike remains a close friend and adviser to all of us in the Islanders family and I look forward to continuing to work with him," Wang said in a statement Tuesday.

In his latest job, Milbury had an off-the-field role in leading Wang's sports teams, the Islanders and the Arena Football League's New York Dragons, along with the organization's charitable efforts.

"Charles gave me the opportunity of a new challenge for the last 18 months and I enjoyed every minute of it," Milbury said. "I'm very proud of our staff and the strides we made last season in corporate sales, customer service and community relations."

Milbury took over as GM from Don Maloney in December 1995 and became notorious for his blockbuster trades. Many of them were seen as hurting the Isles as he traded away the likes of Todd Bertuzzi, Bryan McCabe, Eric Brewer, Wade Redden, Roberto Luongo, Zdeno Chara and Olli Jokinen.
