Jeff Blashill’s decision to go with Petr Mrazek in goal over Jimmy Howard paid off on Sunday night.

Mrazek made 16 saves for his third career playoff shutout as the Detroit Red Wings blanked the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0.

Andreas Athanasiou’s first career postseason goal at 12:42 of the second period stood to be the winner. Captain Henrik Zetterberg added the insurance marker less than five minutes later.

With the win, the Red Wings cut the Bolts’ lead in the series to 2-1.

"When he wants to own the moment, he's great," Blashill said of Athanasiou.

Zetterberg’s goal underwent two reviews before it was deemed a good goal.

Officials first looked at the play to ensure there was no distinct kicking motion from Zetterberg.

Here’s the explanation from the NHL on the first goal first review:

At 17:22 of the second period in the Lightning/Red Wings game, video review supported the referee's call on the ice that the puck deflected off of Henrik Zetterberg's skate and entered the Tampa Bay net in a legal fashion. According to Rule 49.2 "A puck that deflects into the net off an attacking player's skate who does not use a distinct kicking motion is a legitimate goal." Good goal Detroit.

Then Lightning coach Jon Cooper challenged that that there was goaltender interference on the play. Here’s the league’s explanation of the coach’s challenge:

At 17:22 of the second period in the Lightning/Red Wings game, Tampa Bay requested a Coach's Challenge to review whether a Detroit player interfered with Tampa Bay goaltender Ben Bishop prior to Henrik Zetterberg's goal. After reviewing all available replays and consulting with NHL Hockey Operations staff, the Refereeconfirmed no goaltender interference infractions occurred before the puck crossed the goal line. Therefore the original call stands - good goal Detroit Red Wings.

Tampa’s top line of Tyler Johnson, Nikita Kucherov and Alex Killorn was shutdown in Game 3 after combining for six points in the first two games of the series.

"I don't know if they needed a goaltender tonight to be honest,” Cooper said postgame. “Their desperation level was higher than us. The more desperate team won the hockey game."

Ben Bishop made 28 saves in the loss.

Game 4 goes on Tuesday night in Detroit.
