Geoff Platt's first period one-timer slap shot while Syracuse had the man advantage gave the Crunch an early lead.
Toronto (6-10-1-1) sent Syracuse goalie Ty Conklin 22 shots in the second period, but Conklin allowed only one goal to tie the game 1-1. Engelhardt scored on Staffan Kronwall's rebound, but only after Conklin had lost his stick.
Engelhardt scored on John Mitchell's rebound for the game-winner just over two minutes into the third.
Syracuse (4-13-0-1) had a chance to tie the game with almost a full two minutes of a 5-on-3 advantage midway through the third. The Crunch pumped 18 shots on Toronto goalie Jean-Francois Racine but couldn't score.
Racine stopped 31 shots for Toronto in the win. Conklin made 41 saves for Syracuse.
