The Department of Player Safety has handed down a six-game suspension to Daniel Carcillo for his crosscheck to Mathieu Perreault. The suspension is the ninth of Carcillo’s career, and the second suspension that resulted from a stick foul.

Chicago Blackhawks winger Daniel Carcillo has been suspended for six games following his crosscheck to the arm of Jets’ center Mathieu Perreault in Friday night’s contest between Chicago and Winnipeg.

The crosscheck, which came in the dying seconds of the second period, forced Perreault out of the Friday night tilt and sidelined him for Winnipeg’s Sunday meeting with the Arizona Coyotes. The Department of Player Safety’s decision to suspend Carcillo for six games is due in large part to his suspension history.

As Department of Player Safety president Patrick Burke notes in the video, Carcillo has been suspended nine times prior to this infraction, with one of the suspensions resulting from a “stick foul.” Carcillo had also been fined twice for stick fouls, and his status as a repeat offender was said to be, “of heightened significance,” in the decision to suspend Carcillo.

As a result of the suspension, Carcillo will be forced to miss the Blackhawks next five games, with Sunday’s game against Dallas, which Carcillo sat out pending his suspension hearing, counting against the six-game ban. He will also forfeit $40,243.92. He will be eligible to return Feb. 3 when the Blackhawks visit Minnesota to take on the Wild.
