Travis Sanheim and Travis KonecnyTravis Sanehim beat his own team to announce a contract extension for Philadelphia Flyers teammate Travis Konecny.
Sanheim went straight to the source in a post to X (Twitter) on Thursday, six minutes before the Flyers announced Konecny signed an eight-year contract extension worth $8.75 million per year.
"Sources say Flyers forward Travis Konecny isn't going anywhere, as the 27-year-old is closing in on an extension," Sanheim wrote. He then pointed to an image of Konecny smiling on the ice as his source.
After a couple of seasons of trade speculation as the Flyers continue a rebuild, the team and Konecny are committing to each other for the longest term possible with this contract extension.
"Travis Konecny is an integral part of the fabric of our team, and we are thrilled to have him under contract for the long term," Flyers GM Daniel Briere said in a news release. "Travis has grown into a significant leader on our team, and he truly embodies what it means to be a Flyer. His work-ethic, combined with his tenacity and talent makes him a central figure for what we are building towards, and his determination for our future success speaks volumes about his commitment to our team and city."
Konecny recorded 33 goals and 68 points last season, both career highs that led the team. He also tied for the NHL lead in shorthanded goals with six and tied for second in shorthanded points with seven.
Since the Flyers chose him 24th overall in the 2015 NHL draft, he's played 564 games and sits at 174 goals, 226 assists and 400 points.
His future is no longer in doubt in the final season of his current contract, a six-year deal worth $5.5 million per year.
"I couldn’t be happier to sign again with the Flyers," Konecny said in the release. "There’s such a bright and exciting future with this team, and I can’t wait to be a part of it for the next nine years and see what we will accomplish."
Konecny is now under contract until after the 2032-33 campaign. And his teammate-turned-insider for the announcement, Sanheim, will be under contract with him through the 2030-31 season.
The signing leaves two pending UFAs after the 2024-25 season, Ryan Johansen and Erik Johnson. The Flyers also have Cam York, Tyson Foerster, Morgan Frost and Noah Cates as pending RFAs after next season.
