The Maple Leafs took care of a major piece of business on Wednesday, agreeing to terms with head coach Sheldon Keefe on a multi-year contract extension. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the length of the contract is two years, tying Keefe to Toronto through the 2025-26 season, as he had one year remaining on his current deal.
The announcement puts to bed any talk of a coaching change behind the Maple Leafs' bench. Despite guiding the team to its first playoff series victory in two decades, Keefe's performance in the second round versus the Florida Panthers was less than stellar, leading many to wonder if the club would seek a new voice in order to maximize the contention window of their Core Four.
Well, those people can wonder no more.
In the regular season, Keefe has achieved incredible success with the Maple Leafs since taking over as coach during the 2019-20 season. In 267 games at the helm, Keefe has produced a record of 166-71-30 while setting franchise records for wins (54) and points (115) in a regular season.
With Keefe now entrenched at the helm, a rocky summer behind the scenes in Toronto ends in stability. The rest is up to the players.
