DeSmith, 30, has served as Pittsburgh's backup for four of the past five seasons, working with Tristan Jarry over the past two seasons. Jarry had an 11-6-5 record with three shutouts in 26 regular season games this year and was slated to be the team's starting goalie in the playoffs until suffering an injury in double overtime against the New York Rangers in Game 1.
A steady backup, DeSmith has an overall record of 43-28-11 with nine shutouts in 96 games, all with the Penguins. He won the AHL's Harry Holmes Memorial Award in 2017 with Tristan Jarry as the best goaltending duo in the AHL that year before going to the AHL all-star game the following season.
