DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings scratched defenceman Jonathan Ericsson from Game 5 of the Western Conference finals against the Chicago Blackhawks.
The team said Ericsson had surgery after being diagnosed with acute appendicitis Wednesday, but is expected to return for Detroit's next game. The Swede had abdominal pain after the morning skate.
He filled in well for six-time Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom in Game 4. Lidstrom also missed the game Wednesday night because of an undisclosed injury, making the defending Stanley Cup champions thin on the blue line.
Ericsson had five points to rank among rookie scoring leaders in 15 playoff games this postseason. Derek Meech replaced Ericsson and played in the second playoff game of his career.
