The Toronto Maple Leafs signed free agent goaltender Petr Mrazek as free agency opened up on Wednesday.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have established their goaltending tandem for the upcoming season.
Petr Mrazek signed a three-year contract with an average annual value of $3.8 million.
Mrazek was 6-2-3 in 12 games with the Carolina Hurricanes last season. He had a .923 save percentage in that span. He missed two months of the season after having surgery to repair an injured thumb.
The 29-year-old has 29 career playoff games under his belt and will help support goaltender Jack Campbell, who took the reins as the Maple Leafs' starting goaltender over incumbent Frederik Andersen.
Campbell is coming off a career year with a 17-3-2 record and a .921 save percentage. He set the NHL record for 11 consecutive wins to start a season.
Andersen flipped destinations with Mrazek. Having completed the last of five seasons with the Maple Leafs, Andersen is reportedly signing two-year deal worth $9 million with the Hurricanes.
At a $3.8 million salary, the Leafs get a second goaltender capable of big-time minutes at a cap hit that comes at $1.2 million less than what Andersen earned during his five-year run in Toronto.
According to PuckPedia.com, the Leafs cap hit is now approximately $75.945 million with 18 players under contract. They're still targeting a skilled winger after losing Zach Hyman to the Edmonton Oilers. Leafs GM Kyle Dubas also added they would like to add a "Bogosian--like defenseman to the team. Zach Bogosian outperformed his one-year, $1 million contract with the Leafs last season and reportedly has multiple suitors for his services.
