The Hockey News Fantasy Podcast: Feb. 2, 2022

The Detroit Red Wings are promoting from within.

Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman announced on Friday morning that Shawn Horcoff has been named assistant GM, and, as part of his duties, will serve as GM of the team's AHL affiliate the Grand Rapids Griffins, as well.

Horcoff, who had previously held the role of director of player development for the Red Wings for the past six years, will work alongside Yzerman at the NHL level and also be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Griffins, who have graduated a number of players to the NHL over the past several years.

The former NHL veteran has worked closely with the Red Wings' core of young prospects such as Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider, and Filip Zadina since joining the organization in his prior role, overseeing the team's overseas scouting for drafted players, and running development camp.

Now, Horcoff will be tasked with running the Red Wings' most prominent developmental apparatus, shaping the AHL affiliate into a pipeline that provides its parent club with talent on an annual basis.

The Griffins currently sit sixth in the AHL's Central Division with a 15-16-5 record, and currently have 12 players on their roster aged 24 and under.
