EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- For the first time all season, the
Dallas Stars are beginning to show signs of life.
On Wednesday night, they will look to continue their current hot
streak when they take on the Edmonton Oilers for the second time
in four days.
Dallas has had a disappointing first two months after advancing
to the Western Conference finals last season. In fact, the
Stars had been so erratic that they hadn't posted back-to-back
wins until just this week.
Tuesday's 3-1 victory over the Calgary Flames was their second
straight and third in four games, though it was Steve Avery's
actions before the game that made headlines.
The Dallas left wing was suspended indefinitely by the NHL
before the game for conduct "detrimental to the league or game
of hockey."
Earlier Tuesday, Avery made disparaging comments about
ex-girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert.
The Canadian-born actress, best known for her role on the hit
Fox show "24", currently is dating Calgary Flames defenseman
Dion Phaneuf, and Avery use the term "sloppy seconds" in
reference to that relationship.
The length of the suspension is pending a hearing.
On the ice, Toby Petersen, Fabian Brunnstrom and Loui Eriksson
each scored in the win over Calgary and struggling goaltender
Marty Turco recorded 15 saves in the third period.
Three days ago, the Stars dealt the Oilers a 4-3 loss, as future
Hall of Famer Mike Modano snapped a 3-3 tie with a power-play
goal at he 17:39 mark of the third period. He also had an
assist in the first period, giving him 73 points in 62 career
meetings with Edmonton.
The Oilers have dropped three of four, though Ales Hemsky is in
the middle of a hot stretch. The 25-year-old Czech has recorded
a point in five straight contests, including three assists in a
7-2 blowout over the Columbus Blue Jackets on November 18.
