As they were looking to close out their game against Latvia Tuesday, two Switzerland players had a breakaway on an unmanned net. It looked like a sure goal to end the game - but it wasn't.
Switzerland and Latvia played an important World Championship game Tuesday. The Latvians, after a difficult loss to Belarus Monday night, needed a win to move on to the quarterfinal round. The Swiss, meanwhile, were looking to avenge a shocking loss they suffered to Latvia in the qualification round at the Olympics.
With a little more than a minute left in the third, Switzerland led 3-2, so when the Swiss broke up the Latvians at the blueline and rushed in on an empty net with a two-on-none, the game was about to be put away.
Or so it seemed.
This may very well be the worst two-on-none in hockey history.

Fortunately for the Swiss, there was no miracle turnaround for the Latvians. The Red and White hung on for a 3-2 win – not even Kristers Gudlevskis could save the Latvians this time.
Making the loss worse for the Latvians was that it came one night after they were robbed of a tying goal against the host Belarussians for an apparent goalie interference. You be the judge on that one. A win last night would also have clinched the Latvians a spot in the next round.
But back to the shredded 2-on-0. Though it looked bad, it didn’t have an impact on the game – as far as bloopers go, it can rank no higher than No. 2, at best.
