After watching Ryan Smyth get hit into what they are affectionately calling the turnbuckle - the portion of the glass at the end of the bench - I can't help but wonder why it takes dramatic injuries to shed light on the safety of the game.

My suggestion is to simply put something rounded or angled in place of the corner so players will have something to bounce off of, instead of getting clothes-lined.

I'm sure I'm not the first one to make these suggestions. I recall Don Cherry doing a piece on rounding off the dasher to make it safer, but still nothing has been done.

I'm not a safety nut, but I know how negatively this stuff reflects on the sport we love.
