BOSTON - Jaromir Jagr, the NHL's leading active scorer, returned after three years in Russia and recorded his 1,600th career point on Thursday night, leading the Philadelphia Flyers to a 2-1 victory over Boston and spoiling the Bruins' Stanley Cup banner-raising celebration.
Ilya Bryzgalov made 22 saves in his first game for the Flyers since signing a US$51-million, nine-year contract.
Reigning Vezina Trophy and Conn Smythe Trophy winner Tim Thomas stopped 27 shots for Boston.
Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek scored 47 seconds apart in the final minute of the first period for the Flyers, who overhauled their roster after being swept out of the playoffs by Boston in the second round. The Bruins went on to win their first Stanley Cup title since 1972.
Brad Marchand scored for Boston.
Maple Leafs 2, Canadiens 0
TORONTO (AP)—James Reimer made 32 saves for his fourth NHL shutout, and Matthew Lombardi scored in his first game in almost a year to lift Toronto to a season-opening win against Montreal.
Dion Phaneuf had the other goal for the Maple Leafs, who also began last season by beating Montreal.
The Maple Leafs were bailed out on several occasions by Reimer. He made a nice early stop on a low shot from Max Pacioretty and turned aside P.K. Subban's one-timer, getting a fortunate break when the rebound was swept off the post and out.
Penguins 4, Canucks 3, SO
VANCOUVER (AP)—Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin scored in the shootout and Pittsburgh overcame blowing a two-goal lead.
Letang, who also had two assists, beat Roberto Luongo with a nasty backhand deke and, after Marc-Andre Fleury stopped Mikael Samuelsson and Alex Burrows, Malkin sealed it with a strong move to the forehand that stranded Luongo.
Matt Cooke scored once on a power play and once short-handed, and James Neal also scored on the power play for Pittsburgh. Fleury finished with 33 saves through overtime as the Penguins played without captain Sidney Crosby, who continues his long recovery from concussion.
Maxim Lapierre, Keith Ballard and Daniel Sedin scored for the Canucks, and Luongo had 25 saves.
