NHL star Jay Bouwmeester pleads guilty to impaired driving in Edmonton court

Judge Michael Allen fined the Florida Panthers defenceman $1,000 and banned him from driving for a year. Twenty-three-year-old Bouwmeester, who makes US$2.25 million this year, was arrested last summer near Whyte Ave., a popular nightclub area in Edmonton.

He was charged with impaired driving and operating a motor vehicle with a blood-alcohol level of more than .08.

Police allege an off-duty officer had seen the hockey player's vehicle swerving.

The former Medicine Hat Tigers star was chosen third overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
