NHL unveils All-Star Game jerseys, and they have an old school feel

The NHL has gone with four unique jerseys for the All-Star Game and the uniforms play off the colors the host Los Angeles Kings have worn in their 50-year history.

The past two NHL All-Star Games have made full use of the modern jersey style to make the uniforms feel almost futuristic, incorporating neon green in Columbus and mixing together black, white and gold as part of the game in Nashville. But with the showcase set to head back to Hollywood for the first time in 15 years, the league has gone with a refreshingly old school look.

With less than two weeks remaining before the league takes a break for all-star weekend, the NHL officially unveiled the jerseys for the all-star outing on Wednesday afternoon and they’ve done an excellent job of incorporating both the past and present of the game’s hosts, the Los Angeles Kings, into the design.

Unlike the 2016 contest, which used only two specific jersey designs, each division will have its own color this time around and there’ll be no need for jersey swapping between 3-on-3 games. All of the colors are part of the Kings’ 50-year history, too, with the Central Division wearing the old Forum Blue, Pacific Division in black, Atlantic Division rocking gold and Metropolitan Division in white.

The league seemingly couldn’t help but make the jerseys look at least a bit sleek, however, using silver piping around the logo on each of the jerseys with a bar of silver piping surrounding the shoulder yoke and down onto the sleeve. The same goes for the numbers, which use an abstract pattern for a fill, while the lettering on the uniforms was “inspired by the letters in the iconic HOLLYWOOD sign.”

Even with those touches, though, the overall look of the jerseys harkens back to the days when the All-Star Game
