Instead of jumping to a system where regulation wins are worth three points, how about we look at not awarding the extra point for overtime?
To keep teams from getting complacent, we could extend the overtime to 10 minutes. Then, if still tied, each team would at least get a point for reaching the shootout.
My theory is teams would battle harder at the end of the game to avoid OT knowing there isn’t a guaranteed point. And who would risk waiting through 10 minutes of sudden death OT to ensure one point in the shootout?
