North Dakota’s Caggiula throws hat in the ring for goal of the year with video-game tally

North Dakota Fighting Hawks winger Drake Caggiula scored a surefire goal of the year candidate thanks to a couple of moves you’d expect to see in a video game. Watch him undress a defender one-on-one before scoring a dazzling shorthanded goal.

University of North Dakota’s Drake Caggiula is on a tear this season. Through 21 games, the 21-year-old winger has 14 goals and 29 points and is on pace for a career year. Caggiula hasn’t been drafted yet, but he’s certainly going to be garnering some attention after the incredible goal he scored this past weekend.

Saturday night in a contest against Alabama Huntsville, the puck was down in the North Dakota zone when defenseman Troy Stecher backhanded the puck out of harm’s way and into the neutral zone. The puck skipped its way past center ice, where Caggiula was waiting and pivoted up ice. Caggiula was one-on-one with Alabama Huntsville blueliner Cody Champagne and turned him inside out before finishing it off with a beautiful goal:

Not only was Caggiula’s tally a beauty, it came shorthanded. Few would have tried his move one-on-one if their team had a power play, so Caggiula going all-out and using this deke while his team is a man short puts the cherry on top of what was already a remarkable play.

Caggiula is in his final year at North Dakota and it doesn’t seem like he’s taking his last shot at a national title lightly. Thanks in part to his play this season, the newly minted Fighting Hawks are one of the top teams in the country and sit atop the National Collegiate Hockey Conference with a 9-1 record.

North Dakota has appeared in the Frozen Four in each of the past two seasons, but hasn’t won the tournament since 2000.
