WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals

had plenty of reasons to celebrate this Christmas.

Ovechkin and the Capitals hope their good fortunes continue

Friday when they meet the Buffalo Sabres.

The reigning Hart Trophy winner, Ovechkin netted a pair of goals

and defenseman Shaone Morrisonn scored the game-winner in

overtime as Washington rallied from a four-goal deficit to

defeat the New York Rangers, 5-4, on Tuesday.

Nicklas Backstrom had three assists and rookie defenseman Sean

Collins collected his first career point for the Southeast

Division-leading Capitals, who have won six of their last seven

The 23-year-old Ovechkin leads Washington with 22 goals and 46

points this season.

The Sabres are hoping to avoid their third straight loss after

suffering back-to-back 4-3 overtime losses to the Montreal

Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday and Monday,

Buffalo has been fueled offensively by Thomas Vanek, who ranks

second in the league - behind Philadelphia's Jeff Carter - with

24 goals. The 24-year-old Vanek has recorded just six assists

on the campaign.

Could the New York Rangers Part Ways With Artemi Panarin?

Panarin struggled in the post-season, and some reports have suggested it wouldn't be crazy if he was shipped out of the Big Apple. Still, as Lyle Richardson says, it would be a challenge to move the forward.
