Panthers pick Adam Mascherin scores demonic overtime goal

The dynamic left winger has been incredible for the OHL's Kitchener Rangers and this stab against Saginaw demonstrates why

Back in 2014, there was an interesting little debate going on in OHL circles. Sarnia had the first overall pick in the draft and the top prospects were defenseman Jakob Chychrun and left winger Adam Mascherin. While Chychrun had more pro upside, the 5-foot-9 Mascherin would most likely play longer for the junior team. Sarnia ended up taking Chychrun and the Kitchener Rangers, who owned the second slot, can't be too sad about how things turned out.

Because Mascherin is destroying the OHL in his third season after putting up 81 points in 65 games as a sophomore. Right now, he's just one point behind Tampa Bay pick Taylor Raddysh of Erie for the league scoring lead and none of Mascherin's work has been more impressive than this overtime goal he scored against Saginaw on the weekend:

Just incredible. And that first defenseman he sushi-knifed wasn't some stiff; it was Edmonton Oilers third-rounder Markus Niemelainen – a pretty good prospect himself.

Mascherin was taken in the second round by Florida this past summer and so far, his short stature hasn't meant a thing. And really, if we're looking at the current landscape, speed and escapability are just as important in today's game as size and brawn used to be. Mascherin has 27 points through 13 games and has been making magic along with slender Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Jeremy Bracco. At 191 pounds, Mascherin has the weight for the pro game and a great low center of gravity. So while Chychrun is already playing NHL games with the Arizona Coyotes, perhaps Mascherin will follow him to The Show one day. He's certainly got the moves.
