Penguins eyeing season-best eighth straight win

Pittsburgh (36-26-6) at Columbus (34-27-6), 7:00 pm EDT

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins will attempt

to extend their season-best winning streak to eight games when

they meet the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday.

Defenseman Kris Letang and All-Star Evgeni Malkin scored in the

shootout Tuesday to lift the Penguins to their seventh

consecutive victory, a 4-3 triumph over the Florida Panthers.

Captain Sidney Crosby scored a goal and set up another and

Malkin and Jordan Staal also tallied in regulation for

Pittsburgh (36-26-6), which climbed into sixth place in the

Eastern Conference.

"I thought we deserved a better fate than having to go to

overtime," Crosby said. "But we kept going and made sure we

played a full 60 minutes, and we came out strong in the third

and tied it up."

Steve Mason made 35 saves for his NHL-leading ninth shutout of

the season as the Blue Jackets topped the Boston Bruins, 2-0, on


Raffi Torres scored on the power play in the third period and

captain Rick Nash added an empty-net goal in the final minute to

help the Blue Jackets secure the win.
