Penguins Unveil Retro Third Jersey

The Pittsburgh Penguins unveiled their third jersey on Wednesday, throwing it back to an iconic '90s look.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are throwing it back to the '90s.

The Penguins officially unveiled their third jersey on Wednesday morning, revealing it to be a black version of the team's away jersey worn throughout the 1990s that prominently features the word "PITTSBURGH" cascading down the front diagonally.

The jersey will be worn for 11 of the team's upcoming home games in the 2021-22 regular season, making their debut on December 11th when the Penguins take on the Anaheim Ducks.

According to an official team release, the Penguins plan on wearing these jerseys as their alternate kit for the next three seasons. They aren't going anywhere.

The diagonal "PENGUINS" jersey, specifically the black version released today, is one of the more famous in the Penguins' franchise history, having been worn by franchise greats such as Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, and, Ron Francis, as well as making a notable pop culture impact when rapper Snoop Dogg wore it in the iconic music video for his hit song, "Gin & Juice".

After switching their main jerseys to a retro look when Adidas became the official jersey manufacturer of the NHL back in 2016-17, the Penguins are doubling down on their past looks to reach a new audience. That is a well-placed bet, mind you, as their old uniforms have consistently been fantastic.

It won't be a surprise if this jersey is flying off the shelves once they go on sale.
