Philadelphia goalie Antero Niittymaki returns from hip surgery recovery

After being sidelined since before training camp started, Antero Niittymaki returned to the team and, as a result, the Flyers have released tryout goalie Maxime Ouellet.

Niittymaki had missed camp to recover from surgery performed on his left hip. There is talk the Finnish netminder could return to game action next week and, at the rate he is recovering, could even be ready to resume his role as the team’s backup when the regular season begins Oct. 11.

J-S Aubin, who was signed when Niittymaki went down, is now third on the depth chart and might find himself being sent to the American League affiliate Phantoms, though the Flyers have been known to carry three goalies before.
