Pittsburgh Penguins sign forward Arron Asham to one-year deal worth US$700,000

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Pittsburgh Penguins got a little tougher up front on Friday, signing forward Arron Asham to a one-year contract worth US$700,000.

Asham spent the last two seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. He registered 24 points (10 goals, 14 assists) and 126 penalty minutes in 72 games in 2009-10.

The five-foot-ten, 205-pound Asham chipped in a career-high four goals and seven points in 23 playoffs games as the Flyers lost out to the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup final in six games.

The Portage La Prairie, Man., native has 82 goals, 97 assists and 818 penalty minutes in 648 career games with the Canadiens, Islanders, Devils and Flyers.

The Anaheim Ducks have a decent core, but there's lots of tinkering left on the horizon. They need improvement from within, as well as a boost from some new faces, if they’re going to move up the Pacific standings.
