Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby named NHL first star of the week

Nashville Predators goaltender Chris Mason earned the second star while Calgary Flames winger Jarome Iginla was named the third star. Crosby led all NHL scorers with three goals and 10 assists in four games last week. He recorded points in each contest, including a career-high six points (one goal, five assists) in an 8-4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers last Wednesday.

Crosby has 16 goals and 36 assists in 29 games this season for a league-best 52 points.

Mason backstopped the Predators to four victories, posting a 1.21 goals-against average and .958 save percentage last week.

Iginla recorded four goals and four assists as the Flames won two of three games last week.

Also Monday, Anaheim Ducks defenceman Scott Niedermayer won the Mark Messier Leadership Award for October.

"In his 15 years in the NHL, Scott Niedermayer has come to embody the very essence of a leader," Messier said in a statement. "It is the intangibles that are the core attributes of leadership that Scott delivers.

He consistently motivates his teammates to compete hard and right now their results reflect his impact. Scott is also an incredible ambassador for the NHL and the game of hockey as a wonderful role model and through his contributions to charitable programs."
