Player of the Week - Feb. 1, 2010

The Hockey News player of the week for the period of Jan. 25-31, 2010 is Phoenix Coyotes winger and captain, Shane Doan.

In four games on the week, Doan led his Coyotes to four wins and a fourth place sitting in the Western Conference.

Doan, who had been struggling through a cold spell with 11 points in 22 games, started scoring again two weeks ago, but exploded last week. In the first game against Detroit, Doan recorded three assists and the game-winning goal in 17:56 of ice time. It was the captains fourth game-winner of the season and third in 17 games.

Two nights later against the struggling Calgary Flames, Doan scored again, this time in front of the home crowd in 18:48 of ice time. Another goal at home two nights later against the Rangers helped the Coyotes to a 3-2 win, improving Phoenix’s home record to an impressive 21-8-2.

In the last game of the week, Phoenix traveled to division-rival Dallas, where Doan scored his 18th of the season and also recorded two assists for his fourth multi-point game in eight contests. He was plus-3 in 18:58 of ice time and also recorded three shots on goal in the 4-2 win.

With 18 goals and 43 points on the season, Doan is a little shy of last season’s 31-goal, 73-point pace, but the Coyotes are in a playoff position this season.
