Proteau's Blog: Beantown Blues

• As a few media outlets have noted, Tuesday was a good day to be a sports fan in Boston. The Celtics acquired superstar Kevin Garnett, and the Red Sox added Cy Young closer Eric Gagne.

The Bruins, meanwhile, have acquired Manny Fernandez and Peter Schaefer this summer. My continuing condolences to their fans.

• Nice to see that Nashvillians – and more importantly, area businesses – are responding to the franchise's precarious ownership situation. Rumblings

have current owner Craig Leipold about to announce an agreement to exclusively negotiate the sale of the Predators to a local group, which must come as a huge relief to Tennessee hockey fans.

Still, even if the deal is completed, the Preds aren't anywhere close to being out of the woods.

Remember The Spirit of Manitoba? That was the group of Winnipeg businesses that banded together in an attempt to stop the Jets from moving; they too had fans rejoicing at the prospect of pulling the franchise back from the brink of relocation, yet ultimately couldn't stop the move from coming to pass.

I'm not guaranteeing the same fate for the Predators, but their fans definitely should hold off on the victory celebrations for a while. If history repeats, their darkest day may yet be to come.

• Regular readers of this blog have a general idea of how much I detest the commute to and from the office here in Toronto. Well, the drive home yesterday was a little different.

Within a three-minute span, I saw a cube van that had “Blown-Rite Insulation” on the side (this is the part where you make your own inappropriate joke silently to yourself), then a car that had a personalized license plate reading, simply, “Giggidy.”

Random happenstance, or a sign from the Great Creator that I shouldn't be ashamed to be such a fan of Family Guy? I think I know what answer I'm leaning toward.
