Proteau's Blog: Hook and splatter

• Fans at American Airlines Center were witness to a rare double-hook Sunday when both Stars' starting goalie Marty Turco and Avs' starter Peter Budaj were yanked in the second period of Dallas' 7-5 win over Colorado.

Here's the difference between the playoff-bound Stars and lottery-bound Avalanche: Although Dallas backup Mike Smith came in and put up only an .857 save percentage (two goals allowed on 14 shots), Colorado No. 2 Jose Theodore was worse (a .700 save percentage on just 10 shots). Come back, David Aebischer, all is forgiven.

• I think reader and Bostonian Mike Yedinak – who caught my Screen Shots column last week on the perennial sad sack organizations in his hometown and in Chicago – best summed up the Bruins' trade of Brad Stuart and Wayne Primeau to Calgary Saturday night.

Your column could hardly have been better timed. Our trade last season now reads: Joe Thornton for Andrew Ference, Chuck Kobasew, and Marco Sturm.

Dare I ask - AGAIN - what they were thinking? I don't care how many years they have left on their contracts or what "division leading team" they come from; we just sent off the centerpiece of last year's deal for a career 4th or 5th defenseman and a guy who could at best be described as a sleeper.

Same crap, different toilet. I don't know why I always hope for more.

Me neither, Mike. Me neither.

• Wondering whether the Coyotes will be sellers at the trade deadline? Wonder no longer.

“"I understand that everyone makes mistakes," Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said after his team fell to another non-playoff team (Florida) Saturday. "The thing that I can't live with is (poor) work ethic.”

That sound you're hearing is Ladislav Nagy packing his belongings.
