So Lou Lamoriello has extricated himself from the salary cap mess his Devils were mired in.

With Vladimir Malahkov's contract dumped in San Jose and Alex Mogilny certified as a borderline cripple, Lamoriello frees up $7.1 million in cap room and should have Brian Gionta, David Hale and Paul Martin under contract in the next few weeks.

Other GMs are likely incensed the league granted New Jersey a long-term injury exception for Mogilny, but there's little doubt the onetime superstar was done like dinner a couple years ago when he played for TorontoÂ…
