Radek Smolenak scores shootout winner as Heat outlast Sharks 5-4

WORCESTER, Mass. - Radek Smolenak scored in the eighth round of the shootout as the Abbotsford Heat outlasted the Worcester Sharks 5-4 in American Hockey League play Friday.

Heat forwards David Van der Gulik and Jason Jaffray also scored in the shootout, while Benn Ferriero and T.J. Trevelyan countered for the Sharks. Riley Armstrong, Brett Sutter, Mikael Backlund and Van der Gulik scored for Abbotsford (30-24-8) in regulation.

Logan Couture, Ryan Vesce, Ferriero and Trevelyan had singles for Worcester (36-17-5).

Abbotsford goaltender David Shantz made 33 saves for the win, while at the other end Alex Stalock stopped 34 shots.
