The New York Rangers will likely be without defenceman Dan Girardi when they return home to play the San Jose Sharks on Monday night.

Girardi left Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues during the second period and did not return.

"He's got a hip flexor,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault told reporters post-game. “We'll know the severity of it (on Sunday), but at this time, I would say he's a little bit more than day-to-day."

With Kevin Klein listed as day-to-day with a back injury, the only healthy defenceman the Rangers have on their active roster is Dylan McIlrath.

New York would need to place Girardi, Klein or Oscar Lindberg (hip) on injured reserve to recall another blue liner from the American Hockey League’s Hartford Wolfpack.
