Rangers sign defenceman Semenov two days before season starts

NEW YORK - Free agent defenceman Alexei Semenov has agreed to terms with the New York Rangers.

Semenov and the Rangers reached a deal Wednesday, just two days before they open the NHL regular season at Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh. The 28-year-old defenceman had a goal and eight points in 47 games last season with San Jose.

Semenov had two assists and was a plus-2 with 12 penalty minutes in six pre-season games with New York.

In 211 career NHL regular-season games with Edmonton, Florida and San Jose, Semenov has seven goals and 26 assists. He was Edmonton's second-round pick, No. 36 overall, in the 1999 NHL draft.
