Red Wings defenceman Lidstrom breaks nose in exhibition game

DETROIT - Detroit Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom has a broken nose after being hit in the face with a puck during a pre-season game.

He was helped off the ice Wednesday night in Detroit during a game against Montreal. Lidstrom took stitches above his right eye and went to Detroit Medical Center for precautionary X-rays.

The 38-year-old Lidstrom hoisted the Stanley Cup for the fourth time with the Red Wings last season. He led all defencemen with 70 points.

Detroit plays an exhibition against Boston on Thursday night in Halifax before returning home to host the Bruins on Friday. Lidstrom is listed as day to day.

The defending NHL champions open the regular season Oct. 9 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
