Red Wings Sign Top Prospect Simon Edvinsson to Entry-Level Contract
The future is coming.
Simon Edvinsson, the sixth pick in the 2021 NHL draft, has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings.
The deal will begin in 2022-23.
A physical defender with the potential to be a top-pairing option, Edvinsson spent the past season in the top Swedish league, recording two goals and 19 points. He also got into three games with Sweden's World Junior Championship team and had four assists in 10 games with Frolunda in Champions Hockey League play. Edvinsson's 17 assists were the most by a U-20 player in the Swedish league this year.
“The sky is the limit with this guy once he gets stronger,” a scout told The Hockey News last year. “He’s got a puck game, he skates, he gets upset sometimes, which is good to see. He’s got some grit to him. He’ll be a good one.”
Edvinsson can join the Red Wings next season, and a strong rookie/training camp performance could earn him significant ice time after a successful first year in pro.
