LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Count the Los Angeles Kings out of the Ilya Kovalchuk sweepstakes.

General manager Dean Lombardi told the L.A. Times in an email Sunday that the free agent sniper has turned down an offer to join the team.

"We took our best shot to meet his needs and the team's," Lombardi wrote.

Lombardi did not offer any specifics of the proposed deal.

The New York Islanders have also been rumoured to be courting Kovalchuk, who scored 41 goals and added 44 assists last season with New Jersey and Atlanta.

The 27-year-old added two goals and four assists for the Devils in the playoffs.
