Salavat Yulaev takes Game 1 of KHL Gagarin Cup final, defeats Atlant Mytishchi 2-1 in OT

Salavat Yulaev defeated Atlant Mytishchi 2-1 in overtime Friday in Game 1 of the Kontinental League Gagarin Cup final in Ufa.

Salavat Yulaev took the early lead when defenseman Vitaly Proshkin gathered a rebound off of Atlant goalkeeper Konstantin Barulin and flicked a wrist shot past him in the first minute of action.

Salavat Yulaev netminder Erik Ersberg maintained the 1-0 lead until the 44th minute when Atlant striker Sergei Mozyakin scored the equalizer.

In just the second minute of overtime, blueliner Andrei Kuteikin netted the game-winner to give Salavat Yulaev the 1-0 series lead.

“We were ready for this game," said Kuteiken after the game. "We’ve seen all their previous games with Yaroslavl and understand that Mytishchi relies on defense. In addition, they have a good goalkeeper, so we knew not to expect a lot of scoring (chances).”

The second game of the series will be on Sunday in Ufa. It will be broadcast in the United States live at 7:00 a.m. EST on
