Schenn remains with Leafs as other junior players sent back to CHL

TORONTO - The Toronto Maple Leafs have sent a handful of teenagers back to their junior clubs and held onto one.

The Leafs announced Wednesday that forwards Joel Champagne (Chicoutimi), Dale Mitchell (Windsor) and Mikhail Stefanovich (Quebec) were all headed back to the Canadian Hockey League.

Defenceman Luke Schenn remains with the Leafs and was expected to participate in Wednesday's pre-season game at Pittsburgh.

Interim GM Cliff Fletcher has said that Schenn would have to blow management away to earn a spot in the NHL this season.

If that doesn't happen, the fifth overall selection in the June draft will be returned to the Western Hockey League's Kelowna Rockets.

The Maple Leafs also released Jadran Beljo (London), Thomas Stajan (Brampton) and Eric Wellwood (Windsor) from amateur tryout contracts.
