
NEW YORK, N.Y. - Washington goaltender Semyon Varlamov was named NHL first star of the week Monday after backstopping the Capitals to a pair of victories last week.
Varlamov earned his second shutout of the season last Tuesday by stopping 25 shots in a 3-0 win over Montreal. He recorded 32 saves in a 3-1 win over Pittsburgh at the NHL Winter Classic on New Year's Day.
Phoenix Coyotes right-winger Shane Doan was named second star and Detroit Red Wings defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom took the third star.
Both players recorded eight points in four games last week.
