Senators acquire D Drew Fata from Phoenix for F Alexander Nikulin

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators acquired defenceman Drew Fata from the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday in exchange for forward Alexander Nikulin.

Fata, 25, has no points in seven games this season with Phoenix's American Hockey League affiliate in San Antonio. The brother of former NHLer Rico Fata, he signed with Phoenix as a free agent in the summer.

The six-foot-one 220-pounder had one assist in five games with the New York Islanders last season, while recording 14 points (3-11) in 71 games with their AHL affiliate in Bridgeport.

Fata was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins with their third-round pick (86th overall) in 2001.

Nikulin, 23, was Ottawa's fourth-round pick, 122nd overall, in the 2004 NHL entry draft. The six-foot-one 203-pound centre recorded two goals and had a minus-one rating in five games with the AHL's Binghamton Senators this season.

Nikulin had 50 points (14-36) in 71 games with Binghamton last season. He also played two games with Ottawa but did not record a point.
