ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Sergei Shirokov scored 33 seconds into overtime Tuesday as the Manitoba Moose edged the Abbotsford Heat 2-1 in American Hockey League action.

Shirokov one-timed a feed from Nolan Baumgartner on the power play past Heat starter Leland Irving.

"I thought (Shirokov) was decent tonight, but that's a huge goal he scored," said Moose head coach Claude Noel. "We had trouble mustering up some offence for the first two periods.

"We played a lot better in the third I thought."

Manitoba defenceman Kevin Connauton tied the game 1-1 at 9:37 of the third, beating Irving with a backhand shot blocker-side.

With the win the Moose (20-11-4) improved to 3-0-1 against their North Division rivals. The loss extends the Heat's winless streak to seven games.

"Kevin was real good," continued Noel. "Kevin has a way of getting those big goals—he's done that off the rush quite a few times.

"He finds a way to score and he’s been really good at it."

Abbotsford (16-17-5) got plenty of quality chances early as they outshot the Moose 13-8 in the opening 20 minutes. Lance Bouma had a couple quality shots but couldn't beat Moose starter Tyler Weiman.

"We can take a lot of positives—that's the best we've played in a long time," said Heat captain Quintin Laing. "We saw what it took to be successful in the first two periods and in the third I think we let up just a bit and that was enough for (Manitoba) to get the tying goal."

Greg Nemisz opened the scoring at 2:20 of the second, snapping Weiman's shutout streak of over 150 minutes. The Heat rookie beat the Moose goaltender with a shot high glove-side for his 11th of the season.

Weiman picked up his seventh win of the season, turning aside 34 shots while Irving made 25 saves in the loss.
