Sharks sign first-round draft pick Logan Couture of the Ottawa 67s

The native of Guelph, Ont., known for his puck skills and hockey smarts as well as for being defensively responsible, amassed 78 points including 26 goals in 54 OHL games last season. He added a goal and seven assists in five playoff games.

"We've followed Logan's career and he comes from a great program," Sharks GM Doug Wilson said of the six-foot-one, 195-pount Couture. "(Ottawa coach) Brian Kilrea and his staff always do a great job developing players.

"We worked hard to acquire Logan in the draft and we truly look forward to his progression as a player. He is a fine young man and we are happy to have him as part of our organization."

Couture is a sound two-way player who reminds scouts of NHL veteran Rod Brind'Amour. He improved his points total from his rookie junior season despite an early-season illness and injuries. He can play in any situation and gets an A plus for leadership capabilities.
