Shawn Matthias has two goals, assist as Americans beat Bulldogs 6-5

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Shawn Matthias had two goals and an assist and the Rochester Americans held off a late Hamilton charge to earn a 6-5 win over the Bulldogs in American Hockey League action Sunday.

Jason Garrison had a goal and three assists for the Americans, Cory Murphy had a goal and two assists, and Karl Stewart and Stefan Meyer also scored.

Yanick Lehoux scored a pair of goals for Hamilton, while Mike Glumac, David Desharnais and Steve Gainey also counted for the Bulldogs.

Mike Brodeur made 29 saves for Rochester.

Cedrick Desjardins and Loic Lacasse combined for 32 saves for Hamilton.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring when Glumac ripped a shot that beat Rochester Brodeur. Desharnais earned an assist, increasing his point streak to nine games.

The Americans tied the game 1-1 with a power-play marker. Stewart received the puck from Jason Garrison before firing a shot that snuck through the pads of Desjardins.

Yanick Lehoux regained the lead for Hamilton when Lehoux grabbed a loose puck before burying a shot past Brodeur.

Rochester tied the game again when Desjardins stopped a shot by Michael Caruso but could not control the rebound, and Matthias sent a backhand past Desjardins.

Desharnais shovelled a loose puck over Brodeur to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead, but with 18 seconds left in the first period Garrison blasted a shot that bounced through traffic and over Desjardins to tie the game 3-3.

Lacasse replaced Desjardins to start the second period.

Matthias scored his second goal of the game on the power play at 4:16 to give Rochester their first lead of the game.

Rochester went up 5-3 on a power play when Murphy blasted a shot right past Lacasse. Following the goal, Desjardins returned to the net.

Rochester added its sixth goal in the third period. Matthias fed the puck to Meyer, who snapped a shot past Desjardins.

Lehoux added his second goal of the night on the power play. The Bulldogs kept constant pressure on the Americans before Lehoux fired a puck past Brodeur.

Gainey pulled Hamilton within one goal at 13:39 of the third period, but couldn't find an equalizer.
