As part of the annual tradition that is the Stanley Cup champion team meeting with the U.S. president, the NHL commissioner also accompanies the team to the White House. And when league commissioner Gary Bettman made the trip Monday with the 2013-14-champion L.A. Kings to meet current president Barack Obama, he caught some good-natured heat from players for his choice in footwear.

Bettman appeared to go for safe and smart in wintry Washington, and Kings winger Marian Gaborikfound them so interesting, he took a photo and let Bettman have it on Instagram:

Gaborik's teammate Drew Doughty took to needling Bettman from a collective bargaining agreement angle on Twitter:

In fairness to the players, they would've probably teased their own teammate harder had they made such a choice. In fairness to Bettman, Obama has yet to attend an NHL game since taking office in 2009; maybe when he makes his way to a Capitals game, the commissioner will break out the high-end John Lobs.
