Eric Staal's previously rejected, seven-year contract extension with the Carolina Hurricanes has been re-worked to follow collective bargaining agreement guidelines and has now been accepted by the league.
The wording of Staal's no-trade clause had stated it would kick in on July 1, 2010 when he is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. However, Staal would only be eligible for UFA status if he played both of the next two seasons. If he missed one year for any reason, he would not have become eligible on the date stated in the contract.
The resubmission of the contract simply states Staal will have a no-trade clause kick in when he becomes an eligible UFA.
Last Thursday Staal and the Hurricanes inked a seven-year extension worth $57.75 million.
