St. Louis Blues C David Backes to sit out after collision

ST. LOUIS - Centre David Backes has been ruled out for St. Louis' game against San Jose, snapping a string of 274 consecutive appearances.

Backes left Monday night's 3-2 loss to Ottawa after colliding with Senators centre Colin Greening in the second period. The upper-body injury occurred when Greening's helmet appeared to make contact with Backes' head.

Blues coach Ken Hitchcock says he thinks Backes will be out for at least a week.

Backes had played in 289 straight games counting the playoffs. Before Tuesday night, the captain last missed a game on Jan 25, 2010.

Backes has 16 goals and 14 assists in 32 games.
