The NHL’s Department of Player Safety could be busy Friday morning.
In Thursday’s tilt between the Dallas Stars and Pittsburgh Penguins, Stars defenseman Jason Demers caught Pittsburgh Penguins center Nick Bonino with an elbow to the head that left him sprawled on the ice:
Following the game, Bonino told media that he didn’t expect the collision to happen the way it did.
“I just went in and tried to counter the hit a little bit too early,” Demers said, via The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Seth Rorabaugh. “I hope he’s all right. I wasn’t intending to hit him in the head or anything like that.”
Bonino’s reaction to catching the elbow in the face is especially concerning, but thankfully he has no history of head injuries. There was no immediate word on whether or not he suffered a serious injury on the hit. Bonino is in his first season with Pittsburgh and scored his first goal for the Penguins earlier in Thursday's contest.
Demers has never been suspended or fined by the NHL in his six-year career.
