The NHL announced on Thursday that they have suspended Dallas Stars’ winger Ryan Garbutt for three games after a slew-footing incident on Tuesday night.

On the play he was suspended for, Garbutt, who has been under some scrutiny from coach Lindy Ruff for his lack of discipline, took down Winnipeg Jets winger Dustin Byfuglien, using both his legs and upper body to throw the bulky forward to the ice. In the suspension video from the Department of Player Safety, Director of Player Safety Patrick Burke outlines the reasons for the suspension:

As Burke notes, this is the third time the Department of Player Safety has dealt with Garbutt. The most recent suspension came on Nov. 27, after Garbutt attempted to stick his knee out to make contact with Edmonton Oilers winger Taylor Hall. He was subsequently suspended for two games.

What is not touched on in the video, however, is that it was Garbutt’s second such offense in the game. With the Jets leading 4-2 midway through the second period, Garbutt crossed in front of the Winnipeg goal and stuck out his back leg to trip goaltender Michael Hutchinson. Garbutt was assessed a goaltender interference penalty on the play.

The 29-year-old winger will miss games against the New Jersey Devils, Vancouver Canucks, and Calgary Flames.
