Stephen Weiss can’t remember the hit that he says didn’t concuss him

After taking a big open-ice from Buffalo Sabres defenseman Nikita Zadorov, Stephen Weiss left the game and did not return. Weiss says he doesn’t remember the hit but, shockingly, says he passed all the concussion tests.

Even if Stephen Weiss saw the hit from Nikita Zadorov coming, he couldn’t tell you. That’s because the hit, which Weiss told media didn’t concuss him, is one he can’t remember.

After taking a solid jolt from Buffalo Sabres defenseman Zadorov late in the third period, Detroit’s Weiss was clearly in some distress lying on the ice. He was helped from to the bench, was taken to the dressing room, and did not return to the game.

Following the game, Brendan Savage of MLive.com spoke to Weiss, who said he can’t recall the hit taking place but he was not concussed on the play. Weiss also said that he passed all the concussion tests.

Weiss has had much of his time in Detroit derailed by injuries, and a concussion, which may or may not have occurred on the play, would be yet another in a long list of ailments for the 31-year-old winger. In two seasons with the Red Wings, Weiss has only suited up for 38 games.

This is the second time in the past few weeks we’ve seen some oddities resulting from what seemed like a sure-fire concussion, the first of which was Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews suffering a hit from behind and staying out for the resulting power play before leaving the game altogether.
