Stop head shots? Ban the instigator

Steve Lourenco, Dover, Ohio

Being an avid hockey fan living in the U.S., I’m well aware hockey doesn't get the attention of national media.

On the heels of the overwhelming success in Vancouver at the Olympics, hockey seems to have been resuscitated in this country.

This weekend’s incident with Matt Cooke's head shot on Marc Savard has all of the misinformed and uneducated sports media on their yearly rant to ban fighting.

The hit on Savard only strengthens the argument for keeping fighting in the game.

If these so-called experts think that removing fighting from the game will curb these types of incidents they are sadly mistaken.

Take out the instigator penalty and maybe, just maybe, players will think twice before engaging in a dangerous hit.
