T.J. Brodie caps Calgary comeback with bizarre buzzer beater
To say the Calgary Flames have gotten their fair share of good bounces this season would be an understatement, and to call T.J. Brodie’s overtime winner against the Bruins Monday unusual wouldn’t be giving the bounce enough credit.
With seconds left in overtime of Calgary’s contest against Boston, Brodie drove down the wing and, from a sharp angle, threw a backhand towards the net. The puck deflected off of Brad Marchand’s stick, flipped up into the air, careened off the top of the net and back towards Tuukka Rask before striking the netminder in the back and skittering across the goal line. In order to get to overtime, the Flames had to overcome a three-goal deficit as the Bruins took it to them early. Before the first minute of the second frame was gone, Calgary was down 3-0 and swapped out goaltender Karri Ramo for Jonas Hiller. Hiller stopped all 16 shots that he faced in relief, and the Flames stormed back thanks to a goal by David Jones and a pair off the stick of Jiri Hudler.
Brodie’s bizarre goal was his ninth of the season and couldn’t have come at a better time, as the win helped Calgary leapfrog San Jose for third spot in the Pacific Division and put them three points ahead of the streaking Los Angeles Kings.
